Dubai: The 1st heat of the Al Qaha Traditional Dhow Sailing Race in the 43 feet category, held on Saturday, attracted 81 entrants for an exciting journey on a course set off the Burj Al Arab to Mina Seyahi.

In a race that tests the skills and talent of the competitors, it was indeed a race that marks the expertise and experience that go with it.

The long fleet that lined up for the start appeared itchy to unfold their sails because of favourable winds.

As soon as the orange flare was set, the dhows raised their sails to what appeared to be almost in unison like a symphony orchestra.

Skipper Jamal Abdullah Al Adeedi led his crew in Al Loghz to an amazing start ahead of the others at least by half a mile.

Happy man

Judging by the winds he kept going offshore only to realise much later that it was tactic that he required to stay at the front.

This cost him a position and he found himself crossing the finish line in the 20th place.

Saeed Hareb was a happy man after he saw Mikhbat, skippered by Saeed Jasim Al Muhairi in one of the oldest designed dhows known as Houri.

"It is one of the oldest ever since pearl diving and fishing started and it is a pleasure to see this design used even to this day by this crew.

"They are a simple group of family members that are not in pursuit of wealth," Saeed added.

Izam, who took the inshore course, made it with his crew to the first place and there was much jubilation at the finish line.

First heat

The sea off Burj Al Arab appeared swamped with a flight of swans dancing on the water as the stark white sails billowed in the winds that were at 10-12 knots.

Skill, tactic and experience was the order of the day as 81 registered dhows made it to the first heat all vying for a podium place.

This category of races is the lead up to the larger 60 foot traditional dhow sailing competition that culminates in the Sir Bu Naair race that re-lives the tradition of the generations gone by. Action on the waters made a picture perfect opportunity for an artist looking for a dramatic scene.
