London: Human rights campaigners Amnesty has accused Hezbollah of committing war crimes during the conflict with Israel.

The group said that as many as a quarter of the 4,000 rockets fired by the Lebanese guerrillas during the war were launched directly at urban areas.

Amnesty's Secretary-General Irene Khan said: "The scale of Hizbollah's attacks on Israeli cities, towns and villages, the indiscriminate nature of the weapons used and statements from the leadership confirming their intent to target civilians make it all too clear that Hizbollah violated the laws of war.

"The fact that Israel has also committed serious violations in no way justifies violations by Hizbollah."

Amnesty, which has called for a UN inquiry into war crimes during the conflict, said Hezbollah members argued their rocket attacks on northern Israel were a reprisal for Israeli attacks on civilians in Lebanon.

Amnesty's also accused Israel of committing war crimes three weeks ago, adding that it had purposely destroyed food shops by shelling and air attacks.

It also said Israel had deliberately blocked aid convoys and put hospitals and public utilities like water and power plants out of action.
