Gunmen 'kidnap' university chief's daughter
Manila: Gunmen have reportedly abducted the 19-year-old daughter of Eldigario Gonzales, president of the state-run Mindanao State University in southern Philippines's Zamboanga City, reports reaching Manila said. Gonzales was quoted as saying that his daughter, Grace, was walking with a friend when she was snatched at gunpoint on Tuesday evening by four men riding two motorcycles. According to police, they have so far not received any ransom demand for the victim who is deaf mute.

Garcilliano may contest election
Manila: Congressman Nereus Acosta yesterday confirmed controversial former elections commissioner Virgilio Garcilliano's plan to run as representative for the first congressional district of the province of Bukidnon. Acosta, who is on his third and last term as representative of the congressional district, at the same time downplayed the prospects of Garcilliano's victory, saying the controversial former poll official hardly stays in the southern Philippine province.

Arroyo promises 92 new projects
Manila: President Gloria Arroyo said she will implement 92 projects with a combined value of P372 billion (Dh4.8 billion) before her term ends in 2010. During a meeting at the palace, Arroyo pledged to carry out the projects and to provide the necessary funds, citing the government's improved capacity to raise revenue collection and reduce its budgetary deficit.
