From skatergirl to prom queen. What a difference a dress can make.

Avril Lavigne, known for her grungy look, stunned everyone at Cannes in her beautiful Giorgio Armani black-and-white stripped dress and Chopard jewels  earlier this month.

The singer, who recently completed a voice-over for the animation film Over the Hedge, attended its premiere wearing one of Armani's strapless gowns, and looked every inch the glamorous starlet.

Taking our cue from that dress, we turned back the pages of Avril's past and discovered that this girl has always loved stripes.

Let's go back to 2002. Even back then, back when striped dresses weren't acceptable in fashion circles, Avril couldn't resist the pattern and often wore a trademark stripped tie. As she managed to pull it off, she was then spotted in a stripped jacket, too.

Luckily for her, times have changed and zebra stripes, patterned stripes, zig-zag stripes ... stripes of every kind have come back in fashion. And from the looks of it, Avril's revelling in the style.

Take for example the zebra-striped top she wore under a white shirt and vest at the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards in April. Not everyone can carry off horizontal stripes - on their hips!! Over-sized women, don't even thing about it.

Next we saw Avril in an black and grey, horizontal and vertical striped tube dress at the US Weekly Hot Hollywood Awards 2006. On it's own, it's not a flattering dress on everyone, but worn with a metal studded hipster belt, it gets even harder.

Speaking of which, said belt made another appearance - this time at Cannes. But instead of being paired with a dress, Avril wore it with standard black trousers and a striped shirt.

In the months to come we're pretty sure that punk princess Avril will be indulging in her favourite pattern - for as long as the fashion world accepts it.
