Dubai: A group of experts was dispatched yesterday to find out if there was medical malpractice by doctors at the hospital that treated a three-year-old who was pronounced clinically dead.

A senior health official said the team will check on Mohammad Dawoud, the boy who fell into a coma 12 days ago with a viral infection and a tumour in his brain.

Mohammad was on the brink of death yesterday when his heart stopped beating for the second time, according to his father Dawoud Hussain.

"The situation of my eldest gets worse right before my eyes with every passing hour," said Dawoud.

"I am helpless and powerless, it eats me up inside. No one in the hospital cares or pays attention to us.

"They don't listen to me or to my wife. We're just waiting for a miracle to happen."

Dr Abdul Ghafar Abdul Gafour, Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry of Health, told Gulf News: "A group of doctors and investigators has been sent to check the child's situation in Fujairah Hospital upon the request of the health minister.

"The child is in a critical situation. We are doing our best to save his life. There is no benefit of sending the boy to another hospital. He is receiving intensive care from the best experts and physicians in the UAE.

He said the team's report will be released in two days.

Dawoud assailed doctors and staff at Fujairah Hospital for taking so long to diagnose his son's illness and failing to give him proper treatment.

The father said: "They have pushed me to the edge of madness. I don't understand why the intensive care unit [ICU] was left open and accessible to anyone, even if there are patients inside.

"There is only one nurse for four patients at the ICU and the paediatrician took 10 minutes to reach the ICU in order to revive him when his heart stopped beating."

Dawoud blamed the blithe disregard of doctors and the administrative staff in the hospital for his son's critical condition behind.

"I will never ever forgive them if something happens to Mohammad and I will sue all these merciless people," he said.
