Lucknow: Two days before she was to wed a colleague, IPS officer Laxmi Singh attempted suicide on Monday by consuming poison at her Mahanagar residence.

She has been admitted to a private nursing home where her condition is said to be critical but out of danger.

Laxmi Singh, posted till recently as SP in Chitrakoot district, was to marry a IPS officer Rajeshwar Singh on March 2 but the arrival of a police team from Tamil Nadu two days ago, apparently, turned the tables for this young officer.

The Tamil Nadu police team arrived in Lucknow on Saturday to investigate the murderous assault on a Chennai-based businessman Nagarjuna who allegedly had a "close friendship" with Laxmi Singh since the past three years.

Nagarjuna was shot at his residence in Anna Nagar on February 20, allegedly by Laxmi Singh's brother Digvijay Singh.

Nagarjuna survived the murder attempt and is presently recuperating in a Delhi hospital. In his statement, he claimed that he had been threatened several times by Laxmi Singh's mother and brother Digvijay because of his relationship with the IPS officer.

Police claimed that Nagarjuna was extremely upset when he learnt of Laxmi Singh's impending marriage and was threatening to spill the beans about their relationship during the marriage ceremony.
