Abu Dhabi: Faiza Bin Ishaq, an Emirati mother of five, says students in government school should be given more sports facilities.

"There are no swimming pools in my children's school. Also the boys should be given martial arts lessons.

"Important games that help to brighten up the child's thinking are not implemented and the English language course is very poor," says Faiza.

The principal of the school, who wished to remain anonymous, said the reason there was no swimming pool in the school was because of lack of space. The principal said students who want to swim are accompanied by physical education teachers to a nearby sports facility that has a swimming pool.

She, however, said the school has other problems like maintenance, some rooms have old air-conditioning systems that "constantly need fixing. Walls of the school have worn out and need to be fixed.

"The walls need to be painted constantly and this has affected the health of some students."

All outdoor sports facilities, she said, have been ignored for a while resulting in a large amount of money being spent on reconstruction.

"We found that lots of students have been requesting these facilities so we decided to set them up as fast as we could."
