As everyone's favourite children's author so aptly put it, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go."

Dubai-based author Kathy Hoopman has used this premise for her enchanting children's story, Omar's Goat (Jerboa Books). The book - with fun illustrations by Donna Acheson-Juillet - has a strong environmental message.

Omar the goat herder is tired of all the rubbish he sees strewn around the desert every day and decides to enlist the help of the local wildlife to get the desert back to its former natural glory.

"Donna and I believe that today's children are tomorrow's future," says Kathy. "They must be educated with the knowledge to protect the environment, to conserve fauna and floar, and to safeguard waterways and natural landscapes."

Omar's Goat, Dhs42, is available in both English and Arabic from local bookstores. HSBC will also distribute the books to certain schools, along with Hoopman's An Environmental Handbook for Teachers, to assist them in getting a green message across to young students.
