School fee hikes are an issue of concern for thousands of families, as some schools have taken on the habit of exorbitantly increasing their fees without justification. With the steady growth of the private education sector, it is critical that it is appropriately regulated and monitored.

This is being said in light of the recent controversy and confusion over the fee hikes by some schools in Dubai.

With the decentralisation of the Ministry of Education's role, and the tasks being taken over in the emirate by the Dubai Education Council (DEC), it is essential that issues pertaining to the workings of schools, especially in the area of fees, be immediately clarified.

Undoubtedly, there is a lot of scope for contribution and involvement for DEC in improving, monitoring and regulating the school system. Education in all circumstances should not be governed only by the business rules of profit and loss.
