Dubai: The collective effort of students from various schools and instututions and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) to wisely use resources for the past 10 years has achieved total savings of 125 Gigawatt-hour in power and 1.024 billion gallons in water amounting to Dh90 million.

The figures were released during the 10th Conservation Award on Wednesday, which honoured academic institutions for adopting best practices in using resources such as electricty and water rationally and limiting carbon emissions.

"We've seen your efforts and support for sustainability," said Saeed Mohammad Al tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dewa.

"You have rolled out several bright initiatives such as using solar energy in your facilities, replacing traditional lighting with energy-effficient LED lamps and using drip irrigation systems," he added.

"All this has had a profound impact in attaining the desired outcome of promoting the rational consumption of electercity and water."

From just 50 participating academic institutions during the award's inception, the number has grown to 384 within a decade.
