Cairo: A bomb exploded near Cairo University, injuring 11 people, the Health Ministry said Wednesday night.

The wounded were in stable condition, according to the authorities. They included six policemen, one of them is a major general.

The explosion occurred in Al Nahda Square near the university, Egypt's biggest academic centre.

Al Nahda Square in southern Cairo was the site of a  protest camp of Islamists forcibly cleared by security forces in August 2013-- a month after the army deposed Islamist president Mohammad Mursi.

Authorities at Cairo University said that classes will continue as usual on Thursday. The university has seen violent protests spearheaded by pro-Mursi students since the new semester started on October 11.

The student protesters demand the release of dozens of colleagues detained allegedly for involvement in violence on the campus.

In April, a senior police officer was killed and three others injured in a twin bombing outside Cairo University.

Egypt has seen a series of attacks targeting mainly security troops since Mursi's removal.
