Manama: A Kuwaiti lawmaker has called for deporting people who have been stripped of their Kuwaiti nationality.

The deportation should be automatic and without the need for a decision from a court, Nabeel Al Fadhel said in the proposal he submitted to the parliament.

Under the proposed draft, Article 13 of the 1959 Citizenship Law should be amended to state that the interior minister must deport anyone who was stripped of his nationality according to paragraphs one, four and five.

“The deportation decision should not under any court,” Al Fadhel said, local daily Al Seyassah reported on Wednesday.

Article 13 states that the Kuwaiti citizenship could be revoked from naturalized Kuwaitis in case they obtained it on the basis of fraud or false information or were sentenced by a court of law within 15 years of receiving it. Other cases include being dismissed from a government job for disciplinary reasons within ten years of obtaining the citizenship, or spreading harmful information to undermine the social or economic structure. The requirements of the higher interests of the nation or its security could also be used to revoke the citizenship, the article states.

The Kuwaiti government has used the article to revoke the citizenship of several people, including a religious scholar, a former lawmaker and a media figure.

Several lawmakers, including Al Fadhel, have been pushing for tougher measures by the government against naturalized Kuwaitis whom they accuse of failing to abide by the country’s laws.
