Ajman: A massive fire gutted a compound within Ajman's Jurf Industrial area.

The fire took place around 3pm on Friday and engulfed what appeared to be several fuel cylinders within the compound.

"The whole compound was completely on fire," said an eye witness. "It seemed like a fuel depo went up in flames. It triggered a domino effect."

The fire sent plumes of thick, black smoke into the air as it raged for more than two hours which can be seen from several kilometres away.

Hundreds of workers in nearby labour camps spending their Friday weekly off stood close by watching firefighters battling the flames.

Eyewitnesses said an oil tanker parked near the compoundwent up in flames.

"We heard some popping and banging sound," said an Asian man. "It was a huge fire."

It was not immediately clear what triggered the flames. Civil Defense officials are investigating.
