Manama: A 10-year-old Bahraini girl was killed when she was run over by the family car in front of her school.

The driver, an Indian national, had taken Noora Jabr Al Suwaidi and her older sister to Al Iman School early in the morning. After dropping the two siblings and seeing the sister moving towards the school gate, he reportedly reversed the car, unaware that Noora was still behind it.

As witnesses shouted at him, he panicked and reportedly moved the car, fracturing Noora's head. She reportedly died on the spot, local daily Al Ayam said on Wednesday.

The education ministry, located a few metres away, expressed its sorrow and offered its condolences.

“We deeply regret the tragic accident that claimed the life of a student as she was entering her school in Isa Town at 7:20 am,” the ministry said.

“As soon as the ministry became aware of the tragedy, the acting head of private education went to the school alongside several legal officials. They held a meeting with the school administration to discuss the accident. A report explaining what happened was passed on to the ministry officials,” the statement said.

The education minister ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the accident to define responsibilities and take the appropriate measures, the ministry added.
