Abu Dhabi: A revolutionary diagnostic imaging system that tracks the early detection of cancer, cardiovascular and neurological diseases will be introduced to the UAE for the first time.

Mubadala Healthcare (MH) announced that it has broken ground on a molecular imaging centre (MIC) at Tawam Hospital in Al Ain, scheduled for completion by 2009.

The centre will mainly provide early diagnosis for patients with cancer, cardiovascular and neurological diseases.

The images will help physician's select more effective therapies, since the scan allows them to view metabolic activities; pinpoint where abnormal lesions are located and target the disease.

Johns Hopkins Medicine International (JHI), an affiliate of US medical institution Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), will be the clinical operator of the facility alongside its current operation of Tawam Hospital.

Patients from all across the UAE who currently travel abroad for this kind of procedure will soon be able to benefit from an operational Cyclotron or PET/CT diagnostic system [Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography], which offer images twice as fast as with the traditional CT scan with no loss in the quality of the image.
